“Political Philosophy and the Dark Arts”
Prof. Smith is the Alfred Cowles Professor of Political Science at Yale University, where he has taught since 1984. His research has focused on the history of political philosophy with special attention to the problem of the ancients and moderns, the relation of religion and politics, and theories of representative government. His books include The Cambridge Companion to Isaiah Berlin (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming in 2018, co-edited with Joshua Cherniss), Modernity and Its Discontents (Yale University Press, 2016), Political Philosophy (Yale University Press, 2012), The Cambridge Companion to Leo Strauss (Cambridge University Press, 2009), Reading Leo Strauss (University of Chicago Press, 2006), Spinoza’s Book of Life (Yale University Press, 2003), Hegel, Liberalism, and the Question of Jewish Identity (Yale University Press, 1998), Hegel’s Critique of Liberalism (University of Chicago Press, 1991), and Reading Althusser (Cornell University Press, 1984).
Dr. Efraim Podoksik of the Department of Political Science at the Hebrew University will present a response to the lecture.
This lecture is given as part of the Jerusalem Lecture Series in Political Thought and Intellectual History. It will take place at the seminar room in the Department of Political Science at The Hebrew University – Mount Scopus, Social Sciences Building, Block 3, Room 4326.
