Mapping Nature Across the Americas
This talk explores the relationship between cartographic representations and the complex environments that they hope to make legible. Exploring historical maps – what is included, what is excluded, and what is only imagined – is essential to understanding how human relations with nature have evolved over time. These visual abstractions illuminated what resources were valued and who claimed power over them. Brosnan uses examples from the exploration and settlement of the Americas, including those that express the knowledge and claims of Indigenous peoples and other marginalized communities, but the lessons about critical map reading and environmental
