המחקר הגרו-היסטורי, הוא בבסיסו מחקר אינטרדיסציפלינרי המערב בתוכו תחומי ידע שונים, כאשר בראש ובראשונה אלה הם תחומי ההיסטוריה והגרונטולוגיה, אך הוא עוסק באופן הדוק גם בתחומים אחרים במדעי הרוח והחברה. במשך מאות רבות, הזיקנה הוגדרה באופן שונה ובהקשרים שונים בקרב מגוון קבוצות אוכלוסייה, והתגבשה הבנה כי חוויית הגיל משתנה והיא תלויית זמן, מקום ותרבות. בכנס יוצגו חוויות גיל הזיקנה בנסיון ליצור הבנה מעמיקה יותר של משמעות הזיקנה בתוך חויית החיים המושפעת מגורמים תרבותיים, חברתיים ודתיים בזמנים שונים. בכנס נפעל ליצור אג’נדה מחקרית לקידום הידע בתחום זה במבט לפנים, תוך הדגשת החללים המושגיים והאמפיריים הקיימים, והמתודולוגיות המתאימות להשלמת חללים אלה.
