Abstract:
“Paul and the philosophical genealogy of the Jewish-Christian divide”
Inspired by the rise of interest in St Paul among continental philosophers over the last two decades (Taubes, Agamben, Zizek, etc), I have explored his Letters in a series of articles that I am currently putting together for a book. The point of departure in several of them is Heidegger’s seminal lectures on Paul in the early 1920’s, published posthumously in the 1990’s. Heidegger reads Paul in search of an original existential experience of temporality, whereas his one time student Hans Jonas traces an ethics of finitude, and Derrida, in his analysis of the legacy of Paul unravels the ambiguity of his universalism. Based on the attached papers, the seminar will explore core issues in existential phenomenology’s philosophical deconstruction, as well as Heidegger’s anti-Judaism and Derrida’s cosmopolitanism.
