Participatory arts-based research with refugee-background young people: Opportunities and challenges
This seminar will explore the opportunities and challenges of participatory arts-based approaches for researching the lived experiences of refugee-background young people. Drawing on case studies from Australia and the United Kingdom, it will explore the ethical, affective, epistemological and practical implications of these approaches, and the potential outcomes for the young people who participate, academic knowledge production, public awareness, and policy and practice. In the second half of the seminar, attendees will have the opportunity to reflect collectively on their own research with refugee/youth communities, and to share ideas for developing participatory and arts-based research practices.
Dr Caitlin Nunn is a Research Fellow at the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her research is located at the intersection of Refugee Studies and Youth Studies and addresses the lived experiences of refugee-background young people, using qualitative, participatory and arts-based approaches.
