Shtick! is a five-episode webinar series which investigates the connection of modern comedy, satire and religion through some of its most famous appearances in pop culture.
Episode 3, November 11: Christians; US – “The Righteous Gemstones”

Synopsis: The Righteous Gemstones tells the story of American Evangelicalism, and explores themes like family (trust, loyalty, etc.,) and greed. However, it does not make much commentary about Christianity itself, which is the setting for the series. In this episode the speaker will explain why, in his opinion, HBO picked this specific setting, but chose not to engage with the religious content it brings forth in a significant manner.
Sam Victor is currently a PhD student of social anthropology at the University of Cambridge. A core component of his research examines Christian perspectives on the ethics of relationships in Nashville, Tennessee, an increasingly multicultural city in the region of the United States where evangelical Protestantism is predominant.
