reating Global Change An Interdisciplinary Conference in Women's and Gender Studies

The WGST 13th biennial interdisciplinary conference, Creating Global Change is scheduled for March 27-30, 2019 in the Student Union Building.  The theme Gendered Migration, Bodies & Borders is particularly relevant to current events and will no doubt allow for cross-disciplinary collaboration and exploration on the issues that shape migration through gender.  Our keynote speaker is creative writer Daisy Hernandez author of the memoir A Cup of Water Under My Bed and co-editor (with Bushra Rehman) of Colonize This! Young Women of Color on Today’s Feminism.   Her address will be on Thursday, March 28th at 4:30 in the Student Union ballroom, followed by a book signing. As in the past our conference will open with a preconference day Student Showcase on Wednesday, March 27th and will include student papers, performances, and demonstrations. Conference paper panels from international and regional scholars will be scheduled throughout the conference on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  On Friday afternoon we will have a featured panel discussion on “Gendered Bodies and Indigenous Cultures in the Borderlands” exploring how cultures of resistance shape issues of identity, culture, border crossings, and claims on bodies and spaces.  Expert panelists will include Jacki Thompson Rand (University of Iowa) on Native American Women, Maile Arvin (University of Utah) on Hawaiian and Polynesian Women, and Robert Gutierrez-Perez (University of Nevada-Reno) on LGBTQ+ Chicanos/Xiconas.
