The University of Luxembourg invites applications for the following vacancy in its Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education :

Doctoral Candidate (PhD student) in Sociology

  • Ref:  F3-090001
  • 14 months fixed-term contract (extendable to 36 months)
  • Full-time (40h/week)
  • Preferably from 1 September 2018

The successful candidate will investigate subjective well-being, health, and social comparison among young people in Luxembourg and beyond. To this end, she/he will help design, test, conduct, and analyze a large-scale survey, supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Robin Samuel. The analysis of secondary data will complement her or his Ph.D. work.

The successful candidate will become a member of the Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences and the research unit INSIDE (Integrative Research Unit on Social and Individual Development). This multidisciplinary research unit focuses on sociological, psychological, educational, and economic processes associated with social change and development.

Your Role
  • Help design, test, and conduct a survey
  • Design and test own modules within the survey (e.g., vignette experiment, choice experiment)
  • Write a cumulative Ph.D. thesis in the domain of subjective well-being, health, and social comparison among young people in Luxembourg and beyond (based on analyses of survey data)
  • Active participation in national and international conferences
  • Contribute to reports and research publications based on, e.g., analyses of data generated by the survey and already available data sets
  • Contribute to teaching in the field of social and educational sciences at the bachelor level.
Your Profile
  • Excellent master’s degree in sociology or the social sciences
  • Experience and strong interest in quantitative research methods
  • Knowledge of statistical software for quantitative analyses (e.g., R, Stata)
  • Willingness to expand on analytical skills
  • Excellent command of at least two of the following languages: English, French, German (written and spoken); Luxembourgish is considered an asset.
