Call for Applications

The European Research Council (ERC) sponsored project Female Slavery in Mediterranean Catholic Europe, 1500-1800 (FemSMed) at Tel Aviv University under the direction of Prof. Tamar Herzig is offering up to 2 Doctoral scholarships beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year. Successful candidates will be enrolled in the School of Historical Studies at Tel Aviv University and receive a full monthly stipend.

Students who have received their MA (or equivalent degree) or will submit their MA no later than October 1st 2024 are eligible to apply. Applicants with prior research experience in the fields of late medieval or early modern European or Mediterranean history will be considered. Applications from candidates with a background in studying the histories of premodern Spain, Italy, France, and/or Malta are particularly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidates will take part in a group enterprise of conducting a comprehensive investigation of women’s enslavement and its sexual, familial, and broader social and cultural contexts during a pivotal period in European history, as well as the long-term implications of female slavery in the Catholic regions of the Mediterranean. They will participate in the project’s bi-weekly seminar as well as in its research trips, workshops, conferences, and other activities and are expected to produce project-related article(s) and/or monograph. Fellows must be present in the office 3 full days a week and devote 100% of their time to the project and their research. The continuation of the fellowship after the first year is contingent upon meeting the research goals.
