Postdoctoral Research Associate in Jewish Studies

The Sam & Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwauke
The Stahl Center invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Jewish Studies for a two-year period beginning in August 2024. The fellowship is open to early-career scholars who earned their PhD within the last 5 years, including applicants who plan to receive the PhD during the current academic year.
The Research Associate will undertake a combination of outreach activities, scholarship, and teaching that builds upon the “Colors of Jewishness” (CoJ) series, which the Stahl Center launched in 2016. This innovative program has brought prominent artists and scholars including Michael Twitty, Siona Benjamin, Sarah Aroeste, Lacey Schwartz, and Anthony Russell, among others, to Milwaukee, to explore the complexity of Jewish identity through questions of race, sexuality, nation, and language. The position is open to scholars whose research contributes to a multivalanced understanding of Jewish identity. Scholars may be based in a variety of disciplines and fields, including but not limited to Anthropology, Women’s and Gender Studies, LGBTQ+ Studies, Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewry, English, Film, and Latin American Studies.
The methodological approach for the Associate’s teaching and scholarly work may come from any discipline in the humanities or social sciences, including such fields as anthropology, history, literature, and sociology. The Associate’s faculty responsibilities will be shared between Jewish Studies and a department suited to the candidate’s area of specialization, and they will teach courses in each of those disciplines.
The position arises out of the Stahl Center’s commitment to engaged scholarship and offers the Associate the opportunity to gain greater experience in creating meaningful public programs. The Associate’s duties will include a significant outreach component to help us continue to build bridges across Milwaukee and southeast Wisconsin. Under sustained mentorship and close supervision by the Stahl Center’s Director Joel Berkowitz and Deputy Director Rachel Baum, the Associate will organize public events such as workshops, symposia, and lecture series. These events, held off campus and in collaboration with community organizations, will be funded by the Stahl Center and supported by the Center’s staff. The Associate will build upon the extensive network of partnerships, on and off campus, that the Stahl Center has cultivated and continuously fosters.
This position is eligible for UWM’s competitive health and dental benefits. The Associate will also be eligible to receive additional funding for research travel during their time at UWM.
