הלן נלי קאזס בן עטר הייתה מנהיגה פורצת דרך וגבולות. היא הייתה עורכת הדין היהודיה הראשונה במרוקו. היא יזמה והפעילה את ועדת הסיוע לפליטים יהודים במרוקו, הייתה נציגת הג׳וינט במרוקו ואחר כך בצפון אפריקה. פעלה להקל על מצוקתם של פליטים יהודים ברחבי צפון אפריקה, לעלייה הבלתי לגלית ולסיום הנוכחות של הקהילה היהודית בלוב. היא צמחה מעמדת הנהגה שולית לכאורה לעמדת השפעה ציבורית בקהילות היהודיות בצפון אפריקה. בפעילותה באו לידי ביטוי דפוסי הפעילות החדשים שאימצו יהודים לאחר מלחמת העולם השנייה.
דמותה ופעילותה של הלן קאזס בן עטר עניינו את החוקרים כבר לפני עשורים. ד״ר שלום בר-אשר העביר את רוב עזבונה לארכיון המרכזי לתולדות העם היהודי בירושלים. אך רק לאחרונה העמיק המחקר האקדמי והדיון הציבורי על דמותה, תרומתה וחשיבותה בפעילות היהודית המקומית, האזורית והבינלאומית. פתיחת ארכיון הג’וינט על אפשרויות החיפוש בו, התפתחות לימודי המגדר, התרחבות המחקר על יהודי צפון אפריקה במלחמת העולם השנייה כמו גם מודעות גוברת להדרה של יהודי ארצות האסלאם בכלל ושל יהודי צפון אפריקה בפרט מהנרטיבים ההיסטוריים הקיימים היו בין הסיבות לעניין המתגבר בדמותה.
בהקשר זה מבקש מרכז תיעוד יהודי צפון אפריקה במלחמת העולם השנייה שבמכון בן-צבי לקיים כנס אקדמי על דמותה ופעילותה של קאזס בן עטר בהיבטים המגוונים. בין הנושאים שיידונו:
דמותה וחייה של הלן קאזס בן עטר
פעילותה לסיוע לפליטים היהודים במרוקו ואלג’יריה
יחסה לציונות
תרומתה לעלייה הבלתי לגלית
פעילותה לעליית יהודי לוב
היבטים מגדריים בדמותה ובפעילותה
השתקפות המפנה בפעילות הארגונים היהודים הבינלאומיים בפעילותה של הלן קאזס בן עטר
כדי לאפשר פרספקטיבה השוואתית ודיון בנושאים מגדריים יתקבלו גם הצעות בנושאים המשיקים לנושא המרכזי, על פעילות של נשים פורצות דרך בתקופת מלחמת העולם השנייה ולאחריה, בהתאם לעניין ולנושאי המושבים שיתגבשו בארגון הכנס.
הכנס יתנהל בעברית ובאנגלית עם תרגום סימולטני.

A conference marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Hélène Nellie Cazes-Benatar was a pioneering and limits-breaking leader. She was the first female Jewish lawyer in Morocco. She initiated and ran the Committee of Assistance to (Jewish) Refugees in Morocco, and was the Joint’s representative in Morocco and later in North Africa. She worked to alleviate the plight of Jewish refugees across North Africa, as well as to enable illegal immigration to Israel and to bring an end to the Jewish community presence in Libya. She turned an apparently marginal leadership position into a position of public influence in the Jewish communities in North Africa. The new activity patterns adopted by Jews post-World War II were reflected in her actions.
The figure and activities of Hélène Cazes-Benatar already interested researchers decades ago. Dr. Shalom Bar-Asher brought the majority of her archive to the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People in Jerusalem. Only recently, however, has there been deeper academic research and public discussion about her figure, her contribution, and her importance in local, regional, and international Jewish activity of the time. Among the reasons for the increasing interest in her figure are the development of the ability to search within the Joint’s archive, the development of Gender Studies, and the expansion of research on the Jews of North Africa during World War II. There has also been growing awareness of the exclusion of the Jews of Islamic countries overall, and of the Jews of North Africa in particular, from the existing historical narratives.
In this context, the Documentation Center of North African Jews During World War II at the Ben-Zvi Institute is organizing an academic conference on the diverse aspects of the figure and activities of Hélène Cazes-Benatar. Among the topics to be discussed are:
The figure and life of Hélène Cazes-Benatar
Her activities in aid of the Jewish refugees in Morocco and Algeria
Her attitude towards Zionism
Her contribution to the illegal immigration to Israel
Her activities in the Libyan Jews’ immigration to Israel
Gender-related aspects of her life and activities
The turning point in the activities of the international Jewish organizations reflected in Hélène Cazes-Benatar’s activities
In order to enable a comparative perspective and discussion of gender issues, proposals will also be accepted for topics related to the central topic, the activity of ground-breaking women in the era of World War II and afterwards, according to the subject and the topics of the sessions which will develop during the planning of the conference.
The conference will be held with the cooperation of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Anti-Semitism, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Joint, and will be in Hebrew and English with simultaneous translation.
