ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF HISTORY IN LATE MEDIEVAL/EARLY MODERN MIDDLE EAST
The Department of History at Northwestern University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the history of the late medieval and/or early modern Middle East. While the field is open, we are particularly interested in scholars with research agendas focusing on one or more of the following thematic areas: comparative empire, mobility, race and gender. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in History or an adjacent field by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise in at least one, but preferably multiple, primary source languages of the region and be able to advise graduate students in their field. They will be expected to teach a survey course on medieval and early-modern Islamicate history. Duties include research, undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising Ph.D. students.
A letter of application, CV, writing sample (no longer than an article or dissertation/book chapter), and three letters of recommendation (sent separately) must be submitted electronically by October 20, 2022. This is a full-time appointment; the start date for the position is September 1, 2023.
