Duke University Joseph Shatzmiller Fellowship in Jewish Studies
North Carolina Jewish Studies Seminar
Due Date: July 15, 2022
The North Carolina Jewish Studies Seminar invites applications for graduate fellows interested in participating in the life of the seminar. Named after Joseph Shatzmiller, an eminent Duke University Jewish historian and a longtime member of the seminar, these fellowships offer an opportunity to learn more about a range of Jewish Studies topics, meet and engage with prominent Jewish Studies scholars from across the country and the world, and receive mentorship from NC Jewish Studies scholars. Fellows will receive a research stipend of $750 and an opportunity to present their work to an interdisciplinary audience. Up to four fellowships will be offered.
The seminar meets once a month during the academic year, on Sunday afternoons. We bring internationally renowned and emergent scholars to discuss their work. Papers are pre-circulated. This year we anticipate that once again meetings will be held in a hybrid format – online and in person. This call is open to graduate students with preference given to students able to participate in person at the Seminar. In person meetings are followed by dinners with guests to which fellows are invited. While the schedule has not yet been fully set, you can get a sense of our mission here: https://jewishstudies.duke.edu/north-carolina-jewish-studies-seminar.
Duke University Shatzmiller Fellows will be expected to attend all sessions, to host and facilitate at least one session, and to prepare a presentation of their own work for the final session of the fall semester or the spring semester. Fellows will be encouraged to participate freely in intellectual exchange, both at the seminar and, location permitting, over dinners afterwards.
Application requirements: CV, writing sample (10,000 words maximum), and 1-2 page letter of interest, which specifically discusses your research interests in Jewish Studies. Please email these materials to Julie Mell and Serena Bazemore ([email protected], [email protected]) under the subject heading Shatzmiller Fellows by July 15, 2022.
