CfA: Postdoctoral Fellowship in the History of Medicine and Science

The project Anatomy in Ancient Greece and Rome: An Interactive Visual and Textual Atlas (ATLOMY) is offering a Post-Doctoral fellowship beginning October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. We are based at Department of Classics at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Scholars who have received their Ph.D. after October 1st 2017 or will submit their Ph.D. no later than October 1st 2022 are eligible to apply.
The successful candidate will be part of a unique interdisciplinary team, which is working together to produce a visual and textual map and analysis of Greco-Roman anatomical ideas, research and terminology and to re-enact and document ancient anatomical empirical research. The successful candidate will focus on the ideas and research of Galen, in particular his work On Anatomical Procedures.
This position offers the opportunity to be part of an innovative and groundbreaking research which is applying historical, philological, digital and empirical methods. The appointed fellow will work closely with other team members from the fields of history of science, classics, modern veterinary and human medicine, 3D modelling, data science and software development. S/he will participate in the project’s colloquium, workshops and its other activities and is expected to contribute to the project’s collaborative outputs and produce project-related written publications.
The scholarship will be granted for a maximum of three years (subject to review at the end of each year). The fellow will receive a monthly stipend of approximately 10,000 NIS; additional funding for travel to academic meetings abroad will be available following approval. The fellow will have an office at the Mount Scopus Campus in Jerusalem and must be present in the office at least 3 full days a week and devote 100% of their time to the project and their research. Teaching is not required, but might be possible if the fellow wishes to. Knowledge of Hebrew is not required.
Outstanding candidates will be invited to an online interview.
Candidates must have:
– Proven academic excellence
– Excellent skills in either Ancient Greek or Classical Arabic (skills in both are an advantage)
– Proven experience in studying ancient or medieval medical and/or biological texts (experience with Galenic texts is an advantage)
– Ability to participate in academic discussions in English
– An interest and ability to work in a team
