CFP: The Haskalah and European Enlightenment Revisited; Teaching German and German-Jewish Studies in the Twenty-First Century; Democracy: Past, Present, Future

Fourteenth Southeast German Studies Workshop – ASU, Boone, NC, March 2022

—————————————————————–

 Appalachian State University

March 24-25, 2022, Boone, NC

Deadline: 11/05/2021

Seeing the ongoing need for a forum of scholarly exchange and conversation among German Studies professors and students in the Southeast, the Southeast German Studies Consortium (SEGSC) convened its first workshop in 2008. Since then, annual workshops with up to fifty senior and junior faculty members and students with strong interests in German Studies from Louisiana to Washington, D.C., have been taking place at various universities in the region. Like its predecessors, the Fourteenth SEGSC Workshop in 2022 will revolve around invigorating and collegial discussions of the participants’ short, pre-circulated position papers. The meeting eschews formal panel presentations in favor of more democratic group discussions of these papers. The position papers will address one of the workshop’s three central themes, reflecting subjects that have animated recent scholarship in the field.

The 2022 workshop’s themes are “The Haskalah and European Enlightenment Revisited;” “Teaching German and German-Jewish Studies in the Twenty-First Century;” and “Democracy: Past, Present, Future.” The keynote lecture will be given by Professor Dr. Shmuel Feiner (Bar-Ilan University, Israel). At Bar-Ilan, Dr. Feiner holds The Samuel Braun Chair for the History of the Jews in Germany. He is the Chairman of the Historical Society of Israel and Vice President of the International Leo Baeck Institute. Dr. Feiner is one of the foremost experts on the Jewish Enlightenment and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European-Jewish history. Prospective participants from a broad array of fields (including literature and language, history, cultural and film studies, musicology, and political science) whose work touches on German and German-Jewish Studies from the medieval period to the present day are invited to submit a short paper abstract (150 words) and indicate which of the three themes they wish to address (https://holocaust.appstate.edu/conferences/southeast-german-studies-consortium-workshop-22/themes). Submissions should include name, affiliation, position, and contact details. The deadline for submissions is Friday, November 5, 2021. Selected workshop participants will be informed by late November. These participants are then expected to submit their three-page position papers to the organizers by February 15, 2022. The SEGSC committees will monitor the ongoing pandemic, but at this point, we plan an in-person meeting with a hybrid option. The Consortium will cover one night’s lodging in Boone and the workshop’s meals. For more information about the conference, or to submit a topic, please email the organizing committee at thomaspegelowkaplan@appstate.edu.
