Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that the fifty annual scholarly International Conference on Israel and Judaism Studies (vICIJS’21) co-organized by Israiliyat: Journal of Israeli and Judaic Studies (e-ISSN 2645-890X) and Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Department of Israel and the Jewish Communities will be held as a remote/virtual conference in December 06-10, 2021.

The conference scope includes all subareas of Israel and Judaism Studies. These include (but are not only limited to) not only the traditional areas in Judaic Studies but also various disciplines such as current political issues, international relations, history and sociology in in Israel Studies. The point of views presented in the conference will be multidimensional: Zionism, Israeli culture and politics, the conflict between Palestine and Israel, Hebrew Literature, Education in Israel, various interpretations of Judaism as a belief system and historical backgrounds etc.

This year’s conference theme is “Israel and Judaism Studies in a Rapidly Changing Region and World”. The conference aims to address the general issues relating to how external and internal events and processes influence the Israelis and Jews and Israel and Judaism studies seeking new methodological and theoretical approaches to understand them. The Conference seeks to address the issues by analyzing the dichotomies or similarities: Abraham Accords vs Oslo Accords, COVID 19 pandemic vs 2008-2009 financial crisis, post Netanyahu era vs change bloc, secularization vs religionization, right-wing populism vs participatory democracy, night disturbance vs tunnel warfare, start-up nation vs occupying nation, evangelical Christianity loyalty to Israel vs progressive Jewry distancing from Israel, bipartisan support vs Israel criticism, National Religionalization vs centrism, war between wars vs proxy war, religious pluralism vs. religious monopoly, Orthodox/ Torah Judaism vs Secular/ Humanist Judaism, post-Cold War era vs Second Cold War era, digital revolution vs climate change, Chinese/Russian revival vs US reset.

vICIJS’21 also is pleased to announce the annual rawards delivered for the fifth time for the distinguished dissertations/ theses written in Turkey in the field of Israel and Judaism Studies in the categories of history, politics and religion in both the M.A. and PhD. decrees. Moreover, articles and original/translated books having scientific research methods will also be awarded.

The publishing and application/ registration procedures in conference consist of four phases:

(i) application by submitting an abstract,

(ii) registration by submitting the full text and/or research articles (optional),

(iii) participation by submitting the pre-recorded video (optional), and

(iv) live streaming the presentation or replaying the pre-recorded talks (with/ without Q&A).

The file should be sent through Gmail (israiliyat.com@gmail.com) using Google Drive.

This year, due to ongoing uncertainty of SARS‑CoV‑2, the conference will be held virtually, through video conferencing. Depending on travel and meeting restrictions we will adopt a hybrid (both physical and virtual) format.
