HCMH Call for Applications – Tenure-Track Position

Lectureship/Professorship in the History of the Mediterranean

The Haifa Center for Mediterranean History (HCMH) and the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Haifa, Israel, invite applications for a tenure track position in Mediterranean history. HCMH, which began its work five years ago, promotes the historical study of the pre-modern Mediterranean in Haifa, and aims to connect it to the vibrant international networks of Mediterranean research. HCMH encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration on Mediterranean themes within the University of Haifa and outside it. Having recently hired specialists in Mediterranean religions and in environmental history, in this recruitment round we encourage applications from candidates with distinct interests in medieval and/or early modern Mediterranean history.

We are looking for candidates with proven academic excellence in their fields of expertise, together with an extensive background in Mediterranean studies, and a fully-developed Mediterraneanist approach guiding their research. The candidate should be firmly rooted within the historical discipline, with openness to other fields of knowledge in the social sciences.

The position is open to any rank, although senior scholars are particularly encouraged to apply. Should a senior scholar’s application be successful, s/he will receive a personal grant from the Center for relocation and research purposes, on top of the usual University recruitment funds.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. and a demonstrable commitment to both teaching and research. The successful candidate will be expected to teach four courses per year (undergraduate, graduate), supervise theses, and carry usual nonteaching duties. We expect the successful candidate to take a leading role in the work of HCMH. Ideally, the candidate will be affiliated to both HCMH (in the framework of the School of History) and a relevant department, such as, general history, Jewish history, Middle Eastern history, art history, and Israel Studies. Primary teaching language (eventually): Hebrew. Salary according to scale. Starting date: October 2022.

Please submit a dossier including: Cover letter (up to 2 pages, including an academic biography, research plans, and proposed course titles); CV and list of publications; sample/s of writing (up to a total of 8,000 words). Application materials in PDF should be emailed to Ms. Shiri Barnhart, HCMH administrator, at hcmh@univ.haifa.ac.il. Please have three references sent directly to this address. Preference will be given to applications received by 31 July 2021. Interviews for shortlisted candidates are expected during the following Fall term.
