ביסוסן של זהויות לאומיות אחידות במסגרת התגבשותן של מדינות הלאום גרם לירידה במעמדן של שפות רבות, שהפכו לשפות מיעוט. בהיותן סמלים של זהות אתנית, הפכו שפותיהם של מיעוטים למטרות הבולטות ביותר במאמצי ההאחדה של מדינות הלאום. בערב זה יספר הסופר הכורדי פיראת ג’וורי (Firat Cewerî) מתוך ניסיונו האישי, על מסעה המפרך של הספרות הכורדית בתורכיה, הנתונה תחת אמצעי מדיניות דרקוניים של המשטר התורכי שמטרתם לדכא את השפה הכורדית. הסופרת הפלסטינית תערוך השוואה בין המקרה התורכי לזה הישראלי ותתאר את מסעה כסופרת פלסטינית הכותבת בערבית.

The rise of nation-states and concurrent projects for establishing unitary national identities have affected many languages by reducing them to minority status. As strong symbols of ethnic identity, languages of minorities have become the most obvious targets of nation-states. In this lecture, prominent Kurdish writer Firat Cewerî will speak about the difficult journey of Kurdish literature in Turkey under draconian state policies geared toward the suppression of the Kurdish language, and his personal experience as a Kurdish writer. Responding to Cewerî will be acclaimed Palestinian writer Fida Jiryis, who will help provide a comparative look at the Turkish and Israeli cases by detailing her journey as a Palestinian writer producing in Arabic.
