The Asian Sphere Program’s Graduate Student Conference: Interactions, Connections and Collisions within the Asian Sphere

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the Asian Sphere Program’s Graduate Student Conference for 2019. The conference will take place on April 30, 2019 (Tuesday) at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Mount Scopus Campus. We invite abstracts for short presentations from graduate students (both MA and PhD) as well as those who have received their PhD in the last two years. The conference aims to bring together early career researchers from all Asia-related fields to present their research, exchange their ideas on a variety of important regional and global issues, and foster ties within the academic community.

The Asian Sphere Program is a joint initiative in the Humanities and Social Sciences between the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Haifa which deals with the entire Asian continent as a continuous civilizational zone. The program addresses cross-regional contacts and processes among Asian societies, cultures and states and to a lesser extent between Asia and other continents throughout history until present time. This conference is therefore open to those in the fields of Asian Studies, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, Art History, Archaeology, Geography, Political Science, International Relations, Cultural Studies, History, Religious Studies, Philosophy, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, and more.

This conference seeks to explore the range of interactions occurring within Asia throughout human history. From the first arrival of humans into Asia almost two million years ago up until the present day, human groups have been interacting with one another and exchanging both materials and ideas. These interactions most commonly manifest as cultural, economic, political, religious or military cooperation or conflict. These instances of cooperation or collision facilitate the exchange of knowledges, including, science, technology, religion, art and more, as well as the exchange of material goods. We therefore welcome abstracts dealing with any form of intra- or inter-cultural interactions occurring within Asia.

The conference will be conducted in English.

Applicants should submit the following via email to AsianSphereGradConf@gmail.com:

  • Contact info (name, institution, e-mail and telephone)
  • Major area of study (region/s and discipline/s)
  • Title and short abstract (200 words max.)

The deadline for applications is December 31, 2018. All applicants will be contacted at the end of January regarding the success of their application.
