Towards Sustainable Development: Environmental Agenda from Political, Economic, and Social Perspectives

The journal Acta Universitatis Carolinae – Studia Territorialia invites authors to submit articles for its 2020 special issue titled “Towards Sustainable Development: Environmental Agenda from Political, Economic, and Social Perspectives.”

International effort for sustainable economic development can be traced at least as far back as the Club of Rome and the first Earth Summit held in Stockholm in 1972. Further initiatives followed, such as the Montreal Protocol in 1987, Agenda 21 in 1992, or Kyoto Protocol in 1997. However, while the goals and commitments set by these initiatives were mostly implemented on the national level, the ongoing degradation of the environment clearly demonstrates a concerted global effort is needed to mitigate these trends. Furthermore, the environmental agenda affects an increasing number of fields, and as public interest and anxiety grow, its effect on how modern societies are organized is becoming ever more pronounced.

It is in this context that the present call for papers aims to analyze the development of environmental concepts and strategies as well as the impact the environmental issues have had on politics, economy, and society in North America, Europe and post-Soviet Eurasia. The editors welcome original theoretical, comparative and case studies providing both disciplinary and multidisciplinary perspectives from various fields of study, ranging from human ecology, through history, political economy, international relations, geography, up to sociology and anthropology.

The contributions may address subtopics including but not limited to:

  • environmental issues at national and international levels
  • management of environmental crises and disasters
  • dwindling natural resources and energy security
  • sustainable development and changes in national economic policies
  • migration as an environmental issue
  • environmental issues’ effect on political landscape, party systems and voting behavior
  • climate change as a challenge for global governance
  • transnational actors in the environmental issues
  • environmental lieux de mémoire
