Germans have a split attitude towards their army. On the one hand, they have come to appreciate the Bundeswehr, whereas on the other they are skeptical about military deployments on a global scale. Analyzing postwar civil-military relations will help to better understand this ambivalence. Germany went a long way from demilitarization after WW II to an increasing involvement in humanitarian interventions.
