Winter School in Archives & Outreach

From: ica-l-bounces@mailman.srv.ualberta.ca <ica-l-bounces@mailman.srv.ualberta.ca> on behalf of Bart De Nil <Bart.DeNil@faro.be>

We already can welcome participants from Belgium, The Netherlands, The United States, Canada and Israel for Winter School in Archives & Outreach from Monday January 28th – Friday February 1st 2019 in Antwerp. If you want to participate don’t hesitate, we’ll accept only 20 participants!

Since 2014 FARO and The National Archives (UK) have organized the Summer and Winter Schools Archives & Education to assist archivists, education officers and keepers of special collections in their professional development. These training events have been a success and the participants have found it a unique experience. You can see some pictures of the previous editions online (2014201520172018).

For the fifth edition we’ve shifted the focus to the development of outreach programs with archives and special collections for mental health. During five days the participants, depending on their level of experience, are going to be guided in developing an offering ranging for people with dementia in a residential setting to working with communities around mental health issues. The participants will come into contact with a wide range of methods and instruments that already are been used by inspiring cases were archives and special collections are used for the improvement of the wellbeing of specific target groups. They will also be given some perspectives from the mental healthcare side by several mental health specialists.

Truly a unique program that’s also open for mental healthcare professionals who all already are working with or are interesting in working with archives and special collections.

The participants will have their sessions in some of most iconic archive and library buildings in the Low Countries. The workshops are hosted by the Antwerp City Archives housed in the impressive Felixpakhuis (Felix Warehouse) a 19th century warehouse for coffee, grain, cheese and tobacco, see movie clip. And the closing session of the winter school on Friday afternoon 1st January we organize in the Nottebohm Room of the Heritage Library Hendrik Conscience, one of the best kept secrets of Antwerp.

For this special edition FARO and The National Archives (UK) shall team up with the Antwerp City Archives, The Letterenhuis, the Heritage Library Hendrik Conscience and the Recovery Academy Antwerp.
