דמיונות יהודיים של מלחמת האזרחים הספרדית חונך תחום מחקר חדש במדעי הספרות והיהדות במפגש בין תופעות היסטוריות ותרבותיות שונות: ההיסטוריה היהודית במערב, התופעה התרבותית האינטרנאציונליסטית והאנטי-פשיסטית העולה ממלחמת האזרחים בספרד (1936–1939), הגלות הרפובליקנית והשואה. המחקר הקולקטיבי מציג קורפוס פתוח ומציע הגדרה של טקסטואליות יהודית הנוצרת בעקבות ההצטלבות של אופנים פואטיים רבים. הוא בוחן את הדמיון היהודי של מלחמת האזרחים בספרד בהקשר של תופעות תרבותיות כמו אנטישמיות, אוריינטליזם ופילו-ספרדיות. בנוסף, הספר מציע פרספקטיבות שונות על זיכרון ופוסט-זיכרון בספרות יהודית, העונים על דמיון טרנס-היסטורי. באמצעות בחינת מגוון ז’אנרים כמו ספרות בדיון, מסות, זיכרונות, שירה, אגרות, עיתונות ומוזיקה ביידיש, ספרדית, צרפתית, גרמנית ואנגלית, המחקר חושף מחברים לא קנוניים ברחבי המערב ובוחן מחדש את הקשר בין תרבות יהודית וקוסמופוליטיות מערבית. לכתבים היהודיים מהמלחמה יש הרבה מה לספר על המפגש בין מסורות ישנות וניסויים חדשים, במסגרת ‘כתיבה דחופה’, הגירה ותקווה משיחית. רבים מהם נכתבו כנגד הספרות הקנונית, ובהם בולטות צורות שקטות (כביכול) של התנגדות, המתבטאת באמצעות שפה, מבנה, צליל ומחשבה. לבסוף, כרך זה מזהה מחדש את הערך העליון של הרב-לשוניות של תרבויות וספרויות יהודיות בהקשר של רצח עם ורצח אפיסטמי.
