Full Professor in Social and Political Philosophy

Full Professor in Social and Political Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, 1.00 fte

FASoS is seeking a full professor who is an expert in teaching and research in the field of Social and Political Philosophy with an emphasis on models of democracy, citizenship practices, the relations between politics and culture, and theories of power and resistance.

Research is carried out within the context of the faculty’s Research Institute for Arts and Social Sciences and, in particular, relating to the interdisciplinary research programme Politics and Culture in Europe. The selected candidate is expected to develop international research projects and to attract external funding that is related to and in dialogue with an interdisciplinary research approach.

S/he will contribute to the teaching and coordination of courses and supervision of internships, projects and theses in the BA and MA programmes of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The division of teaching and research duties follows the regular division used at the Faculty of 60% teaching and management and 40% research. The research time can be extended through external fundraising.

REQUIREMENTS

The candidate should display outstanding quality in research, strong leadership qualities, a well-developed research profile which is recognised in the field; s/he has a relevant international network and is open to an interdisciplinary approach.
S/he should be an experienced and enthusiastic teacher with a demonstrated ability in thesis supervision, teaching coordination roles, course development and teaching international classrooms. S/he is able to stimulate student learning and to maximize student participation in our system of small-scale problem based learning (PBL).
S/he is a scholar with a thorough background in social and/or political philosophy/theory, has a firm understanding of the history of the field, and possesses extensive expertise in academic research and teaching in the field of democracy, citizenship, political culture, and/or modalities of power. Important markers of this quality in research and leadership include publications of original work in highly regarded journals; monographs and edited volumes published with prestigious (university) presses; acquisition of funding from national, European and other research funding agencies both as individual and as team player; proven skills in talent-scouting and in supervision and coaching of students, PhD students and post-docs.
The selected candidate should be ready to fulfil an important managerial role in the faculty, therefore having strong leadership qualities is deemed crucial. S/he is expected to be a genuine coach as well as a team player. S/he should be flexible and have broad academic interests and an open, effective management style.

Fluency in English is a prerequisite, while non-Dutch speaking applicants should be willing to learn Dutch.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Maastricht University provides an attractive, internationally-oriented academic environment where young people receive an advanced education and scholars conduct first-rate research.

The workload will be the normal workload for the position of full professor. Currently this implies 60% teaching – and 40% research activities.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a full professor for 5-years. During this period, the selected candidate will have ample opportunity to demonstrate his/her talents, an entrepreneurial approach, a constructive attitude, and managerial qualities and performance. Under the condition of a positive assessment the position will be extended in a tenure contract. (A tenured contract is possible for candidates who already hold tenure.)

Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels, depending on education and relevant work experience. This implies a minimum of € 5.059,– and a maximum of € 7.766,– gross per month for a full-time appointment of 38 hours per week (salary scale 14-HL2, Dutch Universities Conditions of Employment).
Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

Applicants from abroad moving to the Netherlands may be eligible for a special expense allowance scheme: the 30% facility. The Tax and Customs Administration decides whether employees meet the necessary conditions.

The candidate must be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If (s)he does not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), the selected candidate will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs or for an allowance for alternative housing. Other secondary conditions include a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave.

DEPARTMENT

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) has about 250 staff members, and about 1,600 students. More than 76% of the students are non-Dutch (64 different nationalities). All programmes are offered in English and some are also offered in Dutch. FASoS offers two 3-year bachelor’s programmes: Arts and Culture and European Studies. It also offers eight different 1-year Master’s programmes and two 2-year research master’s programmes.
Research is organised around four programmes: Politics and Culture in Europe; Science, Technology and Society Studies; Arts, Media and Culture; and Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is housed in the historic city centre of Maastricht.
