The Department of History at Central European University (CEU) invites applications for an assistant professor position in Habsburg Studies. Candidates must have the capacity to develop a convincing and innovative program for research and teaching in topics related to the history on the Habsburg Empire and its multiple legacies, connecting to the Department’s focus of comparative empires. While the chronological focus of the candidate’s research is open, candidates should be able to cover in their courses the long-term processes shaping this area from the early modern period to World War I. In keeping with the Department’s strong emphasis on interdisciplinary and cross-cultural studies, we seek applicants whose research and teaching accommodate contemporary approaches in diverse sub- and neighbor disciplines. We are particularly interested in a research portfolio focusing on political institutions and political culture; cultural and art history; social structures and conflicts; mobility and migration. German language competence and the working knowledge of one more regional language is a requirement. Applicants must hold a PhD degree.

The normal teaching load at CEU is 12 taught credits (where one credit equals 50 minutes of classroom contact over a 12-week academic term) per academic year, plus MA and PhD thesis supervision.
CEU’s Department of History focuses on early modern and modern history, with a number of regional concentrations, including East Central Europe, as well as the Ottoman and Russian Empires and their successor states. With faculty specialized in a number of historical sub-disciplines, it offers as well comparative perspectives on Western Europe and the Middle East. As a complement to the master’s degrees, specializations are available in Jewish Studies, Political Thought, Religious Studies, Visual Studies, Archive Studies, and Science Studies. The Department enrolls about 40 new Master’s students and 6-7 doctoral students annually, with about 50 students in each program overall. Compensation:
The initial appointment as assistant professor is for four years and renewable; salary is negotiable and competitive.
